How does a publishing house work?  Ever wondered how a publisher decides whether or not to commission a work? Interested in getting feedback on your submission?

On Friday 21 October, HarperCollins, Australia’s oldest publishing house, will be in residence at the NSW Writers’ Centre.
*Please note this date has been changed.

Meet publishers from HarperCollins as they take you through how a book gets published from the submissions process through to acquisition, editorial, and contracts.  In the afternoon there will be break-out groups for genre-specific Q&A sessions followed by an opportunity to meet one on one with a publisher to get feedback on your submission.

HarperCollins publishers will read submissions prior to the seminar. In one-on-one 15 minute meetings you will be given feedback on your submission, including advice on refining your submission, whether it is in the correct genre, appropriate length, etc.

Work submitted can include fiction, non-fiction (memoir & narrative non-fiction), kids, YA, genre & literary fiction.

Please submit the below in a single document in word format (size 12, double spacing) to workshops@nswwc.org.au by Friday 30 September:

• a synopsis of your work (maximum one page)

• the first 20 pages or first chapter of your manuscript

• a short note about yourself

HarperCollins is currently looking for Adult fiction, particularly commercial women’s fiction, erotica, romance, children’s books and young adult fiction. Non-fiction including memoirs, biographies, narrative histories and illustrated non-fiction.

HarperCollins is not currently accepting plays, poetry, short stories, essays, mind body spirit, religious titles, health and fitness and educational texts.

In a series of panel discussions HarperCollins publishers will cover the state of the market, submissions and acquisitions, editorial and contracts.
There will be time allocated for questions.
