Poetry Festival 2013
The NSW Writers’ Centre hosted Apoetic: A Festival of Innovative Australian Poetry on Saturday 29 June. The festival was curated by Peter Minter.
New Horizons in Australian Poetry
Over the past decade Australian poetry has enjoyed a great rejuvenation, not least amongst those forward-looking poets who seek out new modes of expression that speak honestly to their radical experiences of contemporary life. Apoetic: Festival of Innovative Australian Poetry celebrated poetry’s revolutionary promise, bringing together a selection of established and emerging poets whose work challenges received conventions about nation, race, language and environment. Some of our best Aboriginal poets read and reflected on the twentieth anniversary of the passing of both Oodgeroo Noonuccal and Kevin Gilbert, and we hosted discussions and readings by leading innovators and experimenters.
The Festival was be opened by Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne.
Panelists included Ali Cobby Eckermann, Lionel Fogarty, Tony Birch, Kerry Reed-Gilbert, Samuel Wagan Watson, Fiona Hile, Luke Fischer, Astrid Lorange, Toby Fitch, Eddie Hopely, Corey Wakeling, Kate Fagan, Jessica Wilkinson, Michael Farrell, Kate Lilley, Stuart Cooke, Mathew Abbott and Ann Vickery.
The NSW Writers’ Centre gratefully acknowledges the support of Leichhardt Council which provided funds for a focus on Aboriginal poetry at the Festival.
