Have you got an idea for a TV show? Tired of working a day job to support your weekend writing habit? Then learn the craft of writing for television from the multi-award winning writer of the much loved series Mother and Son, Grassroots and Stepfather of the Bride, Geoffrey Atherden.
Writing for television is one of the more reliable ways to earn a living as a writer. But it is also a specialised form of writing that can take some adjustment and adaptation for someone coming from a different area of the craft. Whereas the manuscript for a novel is the complete work of the writer (and an editor), needing only design, layout and printing to make it complete, a script is only a means to an end.
This course is an introduction to writing for television, from the basics of script format to the business of selling a script. It covers the relationship of the writer and the script to the production team and the finished program. It’s an introductory course designed for writers who have at least some experience in other forms of writing. Participants will be expected to take part in in-class exercises as well as homework writing assignments.
Over 6 weeks, the course will cover:
1           The basics of TV
A coverage of the range of television writing, including sketch comedy, series and serials, miniseries and telemovies. An overview of production, how things get made, script formats, elements of a script, software, how the script communicates with production, who does what, where the writer fits in.
2           Writing Characters
This is what all drama and comedy is built from. The session focuses on the process of creating and writing characters and developing character driven narrative.
3          Working in a team
Series and serial writing, writing existing characters, matching the house style, working with an editor, taking risks, using a format to explore current social issues.
4           Developing an original idea
Is it television? Is it a telemovie, a long running series, a serial, a mini-series? What drives episodic storytelling? This session focuses on series, the staple of television writing. Creating the television family.
5           Mini series and telemovies
The big ideas, developing an overall story arc, using research, factual drama. Building drama out of the news. This session focuses on one-offs and special drama projects.
6           Earning a living
The business of writing. Coming up with the idea, putting it on paper, pitching, the ‘bible’, taking feedback, when to change and when not to, contracts and rights.
Food
Tea and coffee making facilities will be provided. Course participants are advised to bring their own lunch as there are no cafes within easy walking distance.
Student Requirements
Participants will be expected to take part in in-class exercises as well as homework writing assignments.
About the tutor
