This workshop is suited to established writers who are partly or completely making their living from their creative craft.

Managing an irregular income is one of the hardest aspects of working as a writer. Learning some of the basics of financial management can make the difference between survival and prosperity – even better, you might learn how to turn your creative pursuits into profit.

This workshop covers the following topics in a fun, fast and practical way:

  • Regularisation – Using Feasibility and Cost-Benefit to help you make decisions
  • Managing Money Going Out – Budgets and Cash Flow basics
  • Managing Money Coming In – Finding Multiple Streams of Income
  • What to Charge? Setting your rate, and introducing ‘Unicorns and Workhorses’
  • Getting the Money – Invoicing, Time Sheets, Forcing Payment
  • Record Keeping – Meet the ATO
  • Final tips for practical money management
  • Good financial habits for a lifetime of work

Learning how money works, and how to make it work for you, can be empowering and even enjoyable when it’s done correctly – this workshop will show you how.

About the tutor
Monica Davidson
has been self-employed in the arts since she was a teenager, as a writer, journalist and filmmaker. After learning about business the hard way, Monica started helping others and is now a recognised expert in the field of creative industry. Her work includes training, mentoring and consulting to individual practitioners as well as larger arts businesses and government organisations. Monica also wrote the Australian version of Freelancing for Dummies.

In 2013 Monica was appointed as the first NSW Creative Industries Business Advisor through the Department of Trade and Investment, a role she continues through the NSW Business Connect program. In 2014 Monica was honoured as a Westpac Woman of Influence for her work, and she completed her Master Degree in Screen Arts and Business at AFTRS. In 2016 her award-winning company Creative Plus Business joined the City of Sydney Creative Spaces project, where Monica continues to support creative people who want to be creative, make money, and love their work.
