How does a publishing house work? Ever wondered how a publisher decides whether to commission a work? Interested in getting feedback on your submission?

On Friday 6 October, Hachette Australia will open their doors at their Sydney CBD office to members of the NSW Writers’ Centre.

Meet publishers from Hachette as they take you through how a book gets published from the submissions process through to acquisition, editorial, and contracts. In the afternoon there will be breakout groups for genre-specific Q&A sessions and an opportunity to meet one on one with a publisher to get feedback on your submission.

Hachette Australia will read submissions prior to the day. Each one-on-one 15-minute meeting will offer constructive feedback on your submission, including advice on refining your submission, whether it is in the correct genre, appropriate length, etc.

Hachette Australia is currently looking for: Fiction and non-fiction, including literary and commercial works (in all genres except science-fiction/fantasy), and books for children, middle grade and YA audiences.

Hachette Australia is not currently accepting: adult science fiction/fantasy, illustrated books, cookbooks, poetry, self-help, screenplays or academic submissions.

Please note, you must have a completed manuscript to enroll.

Once enrolled, you will need to submit one Word document as follows:

  • the document name is your name (ie. Jane Doe.doc)
  • include
    • a one-page synopsis of your work
    • the first 20 pages (maximum) or first chapter of your manuscript
    • a short note about yourself including why you love to write
