So where do fantastic ideas for picture books come from? And what really makes a picture book work? Join award-winning writer Lisa Shanahan in this one-day course for beginning writers and learn what it takes to create a picture book from first seed to final story. Together the class will study the essential elements of the picture book form; including creating convincing characters, voice, structure, sound, pace, emotional resonance and the importance of encouraging a creative marriage between text and illustrations. Through practical exercises, students will explore fresh ways of harvesting original ideas from memory and observation as inspiration for their own work, as well as discovering the significance of playful, poetic line-by-line writing. An overview of the children’s book publishing industry will also be given; including issues regarding submission, layout of manuscripts, finding publishers and agents.
