There are almost as many definitions of the essay as there are practitioners of the form. An essay may be reflective, descriptive, analytical, critical, lyrical, personal: any of these things and more. The essay is a welcoming form, because it can encompass almost any subject or approach, and yet to write an essay can also feel intimidating. Our writing techniques, our personal interests and our thoughts are laid bare for the reader.

In this workshop we will consider different aspects of essay writing, including how to refine an essay topic, how to make a structural plan, and how to create your essay’s tone. We will look at examples of the essay form and undertake in-class writing exercises. Participants are encouraged to bring a draft non-fiction essay on any subject, between 800-1500 words, to use as material for these exercises.

Learning outcomes:

1. An understanding of the history of the essay as a writing form
2. Improved techniques for the structural planning of essays
3. Strategies for how to match your essay subject to your essay-writing technique

Participant Requirements
Participants are encouraged to bring a draft non-fiction essay on any subject, between 800-1500 words, for workshopping. The tutor will provide suggested reading prior to the workshop.
