Benefits

Newswrite Magazine

Newswrite is a bi-monthly magazine with information, articles and interviews by some of the top writers in Australia today. Newswrite also includes news from the Centre and around the state and the Youth Page edited by Angie Schiavone.

Discounts

Centre members receive a discount of 30% (40% for concession members) to all courses run by the Centre. The Centre runs a full program of courses for writers every weekend covering fiction writing, non-fiction writing, memoir, crime, speculative fiction, romance, poetry, history, playwriting, screenwriting, picture books, children’s and YA writing, teen writers, travel writing, journalism, business writing, blogging, publishing, zines and more.

Mentorships

Centre members receive access to our mentorship scheme, linking aspiring writers to a professional mentor who will provide one-to-one supervision and discussion of your work. Mentors may be an experienced, established writer or editor.

Manuscript Assessment

Centre members receive a discount to manuscript services run by the Centre including children’s and young adult publishing consultations, manuscript assessment and our contract advisory service.

Festivals

Centre members receive a discount to our writers’ festivals. The Centre currently runs three festivals a year. Festivals include the Contemporary Fiction Festival, History Writers’ Festival, Emerging Writers’ Festival Roadshow, Aboriginal Writers’ Festival and the annual Kids and Young Adult Literature Festival.

Writers groups

Centre members receive free access to our writers groups, which meet regularly to discuss each other’s works in progress. You can join an existing group or start a new one. Full support and free access to meeting spaces will be provided by the Centre.

Writing Spaces

Centre members receive free access to any of our quiet writers’ spaces. Sometimes it can be hard to find a quiet place to write – away from family, internet and the distractions of home (ever noticed that nothing ever needs to be tidied until it’s time to sit down and get some writing done?). Our writing rooms are situated in the beautiful and peaceful Garry Owen House in Callan Park and are a great place to go when you need to find that much-needed quiet and concentration. Booking is casual, just give us a ring before you come down to check the space is free.

Library

Centre members receive free access to our library. The library contains an extensive collection of literary journals and other writing-related publications. Literary journals play a vital role in the development of aspiring and emerging writers and are often the first place a new writer will receive publication. Every journal is different and journals often recommend writers seeking publication to read a few issues before sending in their work. In our library writers are encouraged to do just that. We’ve also got a substantial collection of ‘how to’ guides for writers covering everything from getting started to getting published.

Member Events

Members receive free attendance to exclusive members-only nights that are held bi-monthly. Member nights feature panel discussions with authors, publishers, and other writing-related events. Members also receive free attendance to the members-only First Friday Club, featuring an intimate chat with guest author about writing, followed by morning tea.

Books

Centre members receive a discount on all our books for sale.
